World AIDS Day events held around the globe

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The 20th annual World AIDS Day was December 1, 2007. The theme selected by the World AIDS Campaign is “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise” as it will be through 2010. The day was marked by thousands of events around the world.

“It is now time for bold leadership at all levels in order to turn the tide of HIV,” said Felicita Hikuam, Global Programmes Manager, World AIDS Campaign. An estimated 33.2 million people around the world—one in every 200—are living with HIV, and approximately 6,800 people are infected with HIV and 5,700 people die of AIDS-related illnesses every day.

“The trend is encouraging but still for every person receiving treatment four others are newly infected,” said Nelson Mandela, speaking at a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa. “If we are to stop the Aids epidemic from expanding, we need to break the cycle of new HIV infections. All of us working together with government, communities and civil society can make the difference that is needed,” he continued.

As many as 50,000 people attended the concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, which was telecast around the world. It was organized by Nelson Mandela’s 46664 AIDS campaign and featured performances by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Ludacris, Razorlight, the Goo Goo Dolls and Annie Lennox.File:20050702-Nelson Mandela Live8 Edinburgh.jpg

At a fundraiser in the town of Midrand, in the province Gauteng, near Johannesburg on Friday, singer Annie Lennox had strong words for the South African government’s AIDS policies.

“AIDS, as Madiba [Mandela] has said, is a human rights issue and should be treated as such in order to avoid this genocide that is affecting millions and millions of people around the world,” said Lennox in a speech. Lennox has previously been critical of the South African government’s position on suggesting some AIDS medications were toxic. “It is unacceptable that treatment has not been made available to those who need it most,” said Lennox.

The rock band Queen, which lost its lead singer Freddie Mercury to AIDS, released a new song entitled, Say It’s Not True, to coincide with World Aids Day. It has been made available as a free download from the band’s website. “By making the song available for free, we hope to help Nelson Mandela with his campaign to get across the message that no-one is safe from infection,” said Queen drummer Roger Taylor. “We have to be aware, we have to protect ourselves and those we love.”

In China, people distributed AIDS prevention brochures in the streets and promoted safe sex in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. In Changsha, official warning signs were put on hotel bedstands. The government announced on Friday an allocation of CNY860 million for AIDS prevention and control. According to official reports, there are estimated to be 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Also in China, the Miss World 2007 was in Sanya on World AIDS Day. The pageant presented a special tribute to the fight against AIDS, with a televised speech from former South African President Nelson Mandela, along with traditional dancers from South Africa who joined the contestants in a special song.

Friday, United States President George W. Bush urged the United States Congress to double the 2003 Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to US$30 billion over the next five years. “Above all, we rededicate ourselves to a great purpose: We will turn the tide against HIV/AIDS—once and for all,” he said.

“I’m pleased to announce that Laura and I will travel to sub-Sahara Africa early next year,” Bush said. Sub-Saharan Africa suffered nearly three-quarters of AIDS-related deaths during 2006 and is home to two-thirds of those living with HIV/AIDS.

CanadaVOTES: Libertarian John Kittridge in St. Paul’s

Monday, October 13, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with John Kittredge. John is a candidate in Toronto, Ontario’s St. Paul riding, running under the Libertarian Party banner. Libertarians are a minor, registered political party; they are looking to earn their first ever seat in the House of Commons.

Incumbent Carolyn Bennett of the Liberals is running against Libertarian Kittridge, Conservative Heather Jewell, New Democrat Anita Agrawal, and Justin Erdman, a Green. Bennett was the Minister of Health under previous Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Liberal government. Since it was created in 1935, the riding has been batted about between the Liberals and the now defunct Progessive Conservative party.

The following is an interview with Mr. Kittridge, conducted via email. The interview has had very limited editing, to eliminate in-text mentions of website addresses, but is otherwise left exactly as sent to Wikinews.

At least 400 people have been killed and a further 10,000 injured after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake and its aftershocks struck the remote and mountainous Yushu county in the south of Qinghai province in western China.

The USGS has reported that the tremors started at 07.49 local time and that the epicenter was located 240 kilometers north-northwest of Qamdo, Xizang at a depth of ten kilometers. However the China Earthquake Networks Centers estimations conflicted with the USGS statistics, putting the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.1.

The head of news for the Yushu county television station, who was a witness to the quake, spoke to the state broadcaster CCTV about the incident, saying “In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake. In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off.”

An official commented that around 85% of the buildings in the town of Jiegu, located close to the quake’s epicentre, were destroyed, and local official, Huang Limin was quoted by the Chinese Xinhua news service as saying: “Soldiers have been dispatched to save the people buried in the collapsed houses.” Authorities have ordered supplies to be moved to the area, but Yushu is hundreds of miles away from any airport, according to the BBC.

The plateau where the earthquake hit is frequently visited by tremors; though casualties are rare due to its remoteness and small population. However, in May of 2008 an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the Sichuan foothills, killing an estimated 80,000 people.

Toyota is to suspend sales of its Lexus GX 460 over new safety concerns following an unfavorable verdict from Consumer Reports – the first such warning in almost a decade.

After conducting its standard emergency handling tests on the 2010 version of the Lexus GX 460, Consumer Reports became concerned that the rear of the vehicle had a tendency to slide out, which in real life situations could lead to rollovers. However, the consumer organization is unaware of any such incidents with the 5000 GX 460s sold since its launch three months ago.

Already embattled with ongoing safety issues with its vehicles, Toyota has been quick to act, though it did claim that the car was safe to drive and that it had passed internal safety standards. According to Toyota, “Lexus’ extensive vehicle testing provides a good indication of how our vehicles perform and we are confident that the GX meets our high safety standards.”

The Vatican prime minister who made comments Monday linking homosexuality to pedophilia has been severely criticized by gay rights activists around the world.

Holy See secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said yesterday that instead of celibacy, homosexuality was responsible for recent allegations of child abuse by Catholic priests. He said, on a televised broadcast in Chile, that “Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and pedophilia but many others have shown, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia.” He also claimed to have documents of scientific studies proving his claims.

His statements were immediately criticized by several gay rights groups in both South America and Europe. The president of Italy’s largest such group, Arcigay, Paolo Patané, says “The equation between homosexuality and pedophilia is a false, despicable and anti-scientific statement that affects the lives and dignity of millions of gay and lesbian people.”

The president of Chilean gay rights group, Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation in Chile, Rolando Jiménez, said that the statement was “a perverse strategy by the Vatican to shirk its own ethical and legal responsibility by making a spurious and disgusting connection.”

The cardinal’s statements are not the first time the Catholic Church has made allegations of a link between homosexuality and pedophilia. In 2005, the Vatican prohibited men from becoming priests if they “showed deeply rooted homosexual tendencies.” That move came shortly after a major child abuse scandal in the United States, and was also seen as implicitly linking homosexuality with pedophilia.

At least 30 insurgents and two Pakistani soldiers died in a fire fight between Taliban rebels and security forces in the Orakzai region of the North-West Frontier Province. Officials stated that the gun battle started when the insurgents attacked a military base with rockets and mortars. Army Lt. Col. Nadeem Anwar said that the attack “started at midnight and continued until early Monday morning”.

According to local government official, Sajjad Ahmad, troops opened fire aided by artillery when about 200 insurgents attacked a checkpoint. Ahmad told AFP news agency that “[t]he attack was repulsed and up to 32 rebels and two soldiers of paramilitary Frontier Corps were killed”.

In light of recent events, the United Nations said that it might have to close projects for assisting the people of Pakistan as only one-fifth of the funds they had requested has been collected. The UN had appealed for 537 million dollars in February to aid the one million people dispersed due to recurring conflicts in the northwestern parts of Pakistan located near the Afghanistan border.

Martin Mogwanja, humanitarian coordinator of UN for Pakistan told reporters “The response by the international community to this appeal is inadequate,” and that “humanitarian actors responding to the needs of the people are concerned that some of the projects may have to be suspended because of lack of finances.”

Only 106 million dollars had been donated to the body, 20 percent of the total appeal. Mogwanja said that they were in dire need of the remaining portion of the fund and 1.3 million had been displaced in the northwestern parts of the country, against a total of 3.1 million last year.

Meanwhile, on Monday, five others died in attacks in the Abottabad District over the renaming of the North-West Frontier Province. Earlier this month, several people were killed during a political meeting to celebrate the renaming.

The bodies of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and first lady Maria Kaczynska are lying in state ahead of their funeral on Sunday. The couple died along with 94 other people when the plane they were traveling in crashed in Russia. They will be buried after a memorial to the crash victims.

President Kaczynski’s body was repatriated from Russia on Sunday while the first lady’s was flown to Warsaw airport on Tuesday. Kaczynska’s coffin was driven to the Presidential Palace while draped in Poland’s flag. Thousands of mourners lined the six mile route as her coffin was transported. The first couple will be buried at Wawel Castle on Sunday.

Both chambers of parliament held special sessions to honor the crash victims. Poland is currently observing seven days of mourning while Russia held a day of mourning this past Monday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is expected to attend the funeral. President of the United States Barack Obama and Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper have both announced that they will also attend.

Alabama postal workers and customers become ill, suspicious substance found

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Six workers in the post office in Hueytown, Alabama developed breathing problems and 23 were sent to the hospital after a chemical used in the manufacture of fishing lures leaked from a package.

The post office, located five miles west of downtown Birmingham, Alabama, was evacuated, and Hueytown firefighters in hazardous materials attire inspected the chemical. The chemical was found to have leaked from an inadequately designed package, evaporated quickly leaving a garlicky scent, and discolored the flooring tile in the post office. Workers complained of symptoms ranging from breathing difficulties to vomiting to burning in the throat.

The chemical was later identified as “J.J.’s Magic,” a yellow dye for soft plastic fishing lures which contains garlic oil as a fish attractant. The manufacturer confirmed that a two-ounce bottle of the product was sent to a customer in suburban Birmingham and speculated that the container may have cracked in transit.

All About Oilwell Paintings

Submitted by: Dominik Hussl

Distinctive to the landscape in Texas would be the sight of an oilwell. Paintings are often made of them because while they are found throughout the country and the world, there is such a high concentration of them in Texas.

Perhaps what makes Texas so unique is that while these may be found individually in other states and places around the globe, in Texas they are often found clustered together in rows. This is a sight to behold.

Texas is the state known for petroleum production, so it s only natural that there would be many oilwell paintings depicting this production process.

Just as some artists focus on one subject matter such as lighthouses or seascapes more than another, oilwell paintings are the focus subject for some artists such as Andy Thomas. While this is not the only subject that he paints, he does have an impressive collection of works featuring this drilling machine.

There is evidence of drilling that took place all the way back to the fourth century B.C. Of course, that was a different type of machinery, and the product that was being drilled for was used for many other things than what petroleum is used for today.

It was mostly brought out of the earth for lighting purposes and to help make sea faring vessels more waterproof. Today, it has many uses, but it is known for its use in powering engines in everything from automobiles to jet planes.

Since the first one was built in 1859, it is possible that there are oilwell paintings that date back to that time period. From that moment on, petroleum production became a huge industry and towns grew out of the dust and dirt of prairies and farmlands for the workers who were doing the drilling.

In many of the historical portrayals that Andy Thomas has done, it is easy to see the towns with their rutted and muddy streets crowded with early automobiles, horse drawn carriages, and saddled horses standing idle outside of a mercantile.

Merchants and other types of professionals such as blacksmiths all began to set up shop in the small towns as more and more people arrived to work at each oilwell. Paintings that depict this time period show a clash of old world meeting new innovation and industry. Again, a story is being told with each brush stroke.

It would be impossible to tell the story of the United States during this time period that began in the mid 1800 s without telling the story of drilling for this petroleum based product. It is as much a part of the heritage and history of this country as is the American flag and the story of the Pilgrims coming to first settle here.

Artistic renderings offer a glimpse into the world of those who drilled for the product and those who ran the companies that sold what was brought up from the ground. This is just another story to be told about this great country.
