eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days

Chess champion is “Fritzed” by computer

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Russian chess grandmaster, Vladimir Kramnik lost the final match of his man versus machine match against the Deep Fritz chess program. The six game match in Bonn, Germany had a final result of 4-2 for the German-developed chess program which runs on readily available computer hardware.

The first match which concluded on November 25 was a draw, Kramnik lost the second game to the computer with some indications that he overlooked a mate in one win. Third through fifth matches were all draws.

Kramnik, whilst the current world chess champion, is actually ranked third in the world. A contributory factor in this is his health problems. The world champion suffers from a rare form of arthritis which makes sitting playing in tournaments extremely painful for him.

It’s Time To Re Evaluate Your Help Desk Software.

Submitted by: John R. Wall

Help desk software is available in several styles. An intranet stand alone internal package, web based software that keeps things in the cloud as well as a hybrid utilizing internal and external assets to deal with client or stake-holder needs.

Patterns will continue to push toward internet based helpdesk software and away from standard do-it-yourself solutions. The internet based tools may help automate your processes, minimize complaints and errors, and assist with keeping track of assets and licenses in addition to making “to do” lists and resources.

Help desk software isn t a static application. Good software packages will routinely checck systems and servers to provide key data on performance efficiency and effectiveness. Most helpdesk software support also will let you control particular machines and also work stations remotely to simplify monitoring, updates and trouble shooting.

SysAid, from SysAid Technologies, is one option that’s gained recognition within the internet help desk industry in recent years. SysAid is a set of net based tools that can help you handle a variety of IT and trouble ticket challenges. One of the secrets of their product is the ability to automate many manager responsibilities making your job much easier and allowing you to be quicker to respond. Many reviewers and customers of SysAid help desk software compliment the company s web interface. The software is fairly intuitive and permits strong metrics. SysAid helpdesk software offers a limited no-cost helpdesk solution that may be of interested to a lot of smaller firms as well. With only a minimal knowledge of programming, it should be pretty easy to this helpdesk application installed and setup.

Another fascinating provider in the help desk software space is Kayako. Although this internet housed package offers many similar pc and internet solutions to SysAid, Kayako also offers an automatic installer that will have the helpdesk software running on just about any server after a directed installation process. Kayako reviewers often rave about the chat service made available from the Kayako. The company features SupportSuite, eSupport and LiveResponse within 3 levels of pricing and license charges.

One interesting feature offered from many of these companies in both their no charge helpdesk software and subscription/pay services is assistance in a variety of languages. SysAid, as an example, has helpdesk softare built in a variety of languages common throughout the U.S. and Europe. The mix is the perfect variety of languages for the international company with a European concentration.

Other companies include Asian ‘languages’ with their helpdesk support. There are a number of companies that offer software with customizable language dictionaries and regionally focused programs. Depending on where your work-force and customer base is located, you may want to choose a different help desk software package. Make sure the one you choose also matches your future growth plans.

Virtually every IT helpdesk program will also provide a feature that is sometimes forgotten. Licensing compliance for your software. It’s every company s responsibility to make sure that they purchase the necessary licenses for the software placed on their computers. The risk is great.

In 2008, for example, the conglomerate Sony BMG caught the eye of investigators who identified that nearly 47% of the software titles on Sony s individual PCs, Macs and servers were not compliant. This is a company that had been at the forefront in legal battles working to stop unlicensed use of its content. This investigation was costly for Sony, but more importantly, Sony BMG was subject to unwanted publicity that could could have been averted. With a well designed strategy utilizing IT helpdesk software they could have created reports decreasing the business’ risks.

Car Insurance How You Can Make Huge Savings 5

Car Insurance — How You Can Make Huge Savings 5

by

Chimezirim Odimba

You can make a lot of savings in car insurance by taking out some time to really understand a few things. With proper understanding of ways you can cut costs and still remain well-covered. You can shave off up to $2,000 from your insurance premium annually. This tip will help you…

There are different policies as far as your car insurance is concerned. You can go for comprehensive, collision or third party. You can even include some add ons depending on your peculiar circumstances. These add ons come at a price. However, not getting the right policy will cost you a lot more on the long run.

If you want to save a bundle, opt for third party only cover. It s the minimum required by law in most places. This policy takes care of the other vehicle, not yours, in the event of an accident. Your own car is not covered. This means that you ll have to pay out of your own pocket to fix your car. This should be your preferred choice if you have an old car.

Just to ensure we are all on the same plate, let s explain briefly the other popular policies: Comprehensive and collision. A comprehensive plan covers your car, the other car and persons involved in the accident as well as losses due to fire, theft and vandalism. A collision policy covers your car if you crash into another object. Now, back to our discourse…

If, for example, you get a comprehensive cover for an old car, your insurance company will only pay you the value of your car at the time of the accident. Add to that your deductible (An amount you must pay before your insurance fulfills its obligation) and you ll discover that if your car is just an old one (not a classic), what you ll get will not be worth the premiums you d have been paying.

If an insurance policy won t pay off on the long run, it certainly isn t worth the pains.

And did I say that different insurance companies will charge you differently for a similar policy? So how do you know the best and cheapest if not by getting quotes from a number of insurance companies?

I have taken some time out to do extensive research on making massive savings in car insurance. You can take advantage of it for free here:

Former Washington D.C. police officer sues district for racial discrimination and harassment

Friday, June 22, 2007

According to court documents obtained by Wikinews, Randy Squires, an African American male and a former police officer of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (DCMPD) has filed a lawsuit against the department alleging racial discrimination and harassment by a fellow officer. Squires is also suing the former mayor of D.C., Anthony A. Williams, and the district’s Attorney Generals office. Squires is also suing his superior officer, Robert Atcheson, for racial discrimination and harassment.

“Defendant Atcheson treated Plaintiff differently than similarly situated Caucasian police officers in several respect[sic], including but not limited to assignments, evaluation, and disciplinary actions, deprivation of overtime and use of departmental vehicles,” stated court papers filed by Squires’ attorneys, Donald M. Temple and Dhamian A. Blue of Temple Law Offices in Washington D.C.

Squires accuses Atcheson, a white-caucasian male and a lieutenant in the Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU) Warrant Squad and the Paternity Warrant Squad, of discriminating against him on the basis of the color of his skin and also harassing him while on the job. Squires originally started to work in DCMPD 1988, and shortly after he was hired, he began to work in the ECU. Atcheson was in control of the unit Squires belonged to.

In court documents, Squires alleges Atcheson treated him with “flagrant racial discriminatory conduct,” like using the word “mope,” which is defined as slang for “nigger,” and that the discrimination was “designed to intimidate, insult, emasculate and humiliate” Squires. In one incident in 2002, during a training exercise, Atcheson allegedly “deprived Squires of appropriate breathing apparatus, which is designed to save life in emergency and hazardous situations,” but that the apparatus was “provided to two other caucasian officers.”

Documents also allege that Atcheson had “falsified” a report to North Carolina State Police after Squires was arrested and wrongfully charged with “unauthorized taking of a police vehicle.” Court documents say that the report to N.C. police states that “Atcheson falsely told Plaintiff (Squires) that he had photographic evidence of the police car outside Plaintiff’s home overnight and of Plaintiff driving the car from his home.”

Court documents also allege that Squires allegedly informed his superior officer of Atcheson, only known as ‘Captain Brito,’ of the incident, but no action was ever taken against Atcheson. Squires initially filed a complaint against Atcheson with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, (EEOC) in a letter on March March 8, 2005.

The Washington D.C. police department has investigated the claims made by Squires, which “revealed inappropriate conduct toward Squires,” but according to documents, no disciplinary action has been taken against Atcheson or his superiors.

The defendants “deny any and all allegations” that Squires has made against them and also state that Squires “failed to exhaust their administrative remedies and/or failed to comply with other mandatory filing requirements.” Defendants also say that “all actions taken by District (Washington D.C.) relating to Plaintiffs were necessary, reasonable, pursuant to lawful authority, and based on legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons” and that “the district denies that any district policymaker adopted, approved, condoned and/or maintained an unconstitutional policy, practice or custom of unlawful employment practices.”

Squires is asking at least US$350,000. Squires and the Defendants also request that a jury be present during the trial, which is scheduled to conclude on June 26.

Solar-powered airplane makes first international flight

Sunday, May 15, 2011

The solar-powered airplane Solar Impulse touched down at the Brussels National Airport late Friday night, after completing a 13-hour flight from its home base in Payerne, Switzerland. It was the first international flight by a fully solar-powered aircraft.

The experimental aircraft was piloted by André Borschberg, co-founder and chief engineer for the Solar Impulse project, which hopes to circumnavigate the globe using only the sun’s energy in 2013. “Our goal is to create a revolution in the minds of people…to promote solar energies — not necessarily a revolution in aviation,” Bertrand Piccard, the group’s other co-founder, said in an interview after the flight.

The aircraft collects energy from the sun using 12,000 extremely thin solar cells affixed to the wings and tail section. An on-board battery can store enough electricity to fly all night, allowing the Solar Impulse to stay aloft indefinitely. This allowed the aircraft to maintain a holding pattern over the Brussels airport as other flights landed and conditions were right for the Solar Impulse to land. Because the aircraft weighs only about 3,500 pounds and has a wingspan of 200 feet, it is extremely sensitive to wind and needs calm conditions to land safely.

Cabinet Painting, A Good Option At Dfw

By Rajesh Karavadia

Its not a sin to be practical nowadays, in fact, it is downright scandalous to be wasting money. Prices are all going up while the salaries of consumers remain the same. In todays hard times, it is always imperative to monitor all expenses and try to save in a lot of ways.

Maintaining a house is not as easy as you think. In fact, if you try to check the different areas of your home, you can find a lot of things that need to be replaced or remodeled. The kitchen is a busy place and this is where you prepare food for your family everyday. Kitchen cabinets are used frequently and so it is not surprising that they become old and dull as the years go by. Thinking about the possible expenses of disposing all the kitchen cabinets and purchasing new ones can be very frustrating.

This is where painting options come in. Purchasing brand new kitchen cabinets costs a lot especially if you go for custom designs. It will take some time before the cabinets are delivered and not only that, there are times when the cabinets are not the way you imagined them to be. During this tough time, what can you do?

Well, dont lose hope yet because you can still save your kitchen cabinets. Check if the cabinets are still in good condition. Perhaps they only look old because the surfaces have faded already. What you need is good quality paint to change the look of your dull kitchen cabinets. In fact, you can paint every cabinet in the house that needs a new look.

Why is it that the beauty of kitchen cabinets fade easily? In the kitchen, there are usually accidents taking place like messy spills, cooking grease, and grimy hands. So as you can see, the cabinets are constantly beaten. If youre short of money or simply want to save money in remodeling the kitchen, the easiest and cheapest solution is to paint the cabinets.

But wait you dont have to hire another person to paint the cabinets because you can also do it by yourself. Old cabinets usually made from high quality materials as compared to the new cabinets sold in the market at present, so it would be best to paint them a new look. You only have to spend on the paint, primer, and the brushes and after purchasing the materials, you can already start your painting project. Hiring a professional painter will only be an added cost so instead, do the job yourself and use the money to buy even more good quality paints.

If you cabinet has structural problems like cuts, nicks, worn surfaces, etc. you can replace the defective part. After replacing the defective part of the cabinet, it is only the time that you can start painting. Painting can really make miracles and by choosing the right shades for your kitchen cabinets, the whole kitchen will look fresh once more. Now, you can again cook to your hearts content and enjoy the new look and atmosphere in your kitchen.

You can find several manufacturers and distributors of paints in DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) so just look around and you will find them. If you live in this area, you will not find it hard to locate stores that offer good quality paints that you can use in painting your old kitchen cabinets.
