Depakote Allegedly Responsible For Causing Ovarian Cysts In Women

Although past studies regarding the anticonvulsant medication, Depakote, have focused on the potential for the drug to cause major birth defects in infants who are exposed to Depakote in utero, recent research has indicated that Depakote may also contribute to an increased risk of ovarian cysts in women who take the drug to treat their seizure-related disorders. In fact, according to a recent study, 10.5% of women who took Abbott Laboratories’ Depakote developed irregularities in their menstrual cycles accompanied by hyperandrogenism, a risk factor for ovarian cysts. This significant risk represents a percentage 7.5 times higher than that of other anti-seizure medications, like Lithium.

Depakote use has been associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition caused by a hormone imbalance in the brain and ovaries, affecting approximately five to ten percent of women of child-bearing age. Changes to the ovaries typical of PCOS cause multiple follicles to accumulate in the ovaries without being ovulated. The ovaries then secrete increased levels of estrogen and testosterone, causing women with PCOS to experience irregular or absent menstruation, hypertension, diabetes, excess body hair and obesity. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is also believed to be one of the leading causes of infertility in females.

The ovaries of women with PCOS receive irregular signals from the pituitary gland, which prevents them from ovulating, or producing eggs. Lack of ovulation causes infertility and can also lead to other severe medical conditions such as endometrial cancer and a disorder called endometrial hyperplasia. Many women with PCOS are prescribed a form of birth control pill since these products contain the hormones a woman’s body requires to treat the condition. By taking these hormone-containing contraceptives, women with PCOS can correct their hormone imbalance, regulate their menstrual cycle, lower the level of testosterone in their bodies, and decrease their risk of developing endometrial cancer.

According to extensive research, PCOS has a higher prevalence in women with bipolar disorder, which may be caused directly or indirectly by the use of valproate-containing anticonvulsant medications like Depakote. Regardless of the specific role Depakote may play in the potential development of polycystic ovarian syndrome, experts believe that anti-epileptic medications like Depakote may significantly compound the risk of women developing PCOS, potentially causing infertility and other major medical issues.

Russian commander: Tu-160s penetrate US airspace undetected

Tuesday, April 25, 2006File:Tu 16019.jpg

A senior Russian air force commander has claimed that new, upgraded Tu-160 bomber aircraft were unchallenged by US air defense systems when they penetrated a radar zone near the Canadian coast in US territory during an April training exercise, reports the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Commander of Russia’s long-range strategic bombers, Lieutenant General Igor Khvorov said that the bombers successfully carried out four mock Tu-95MS cruise missile launches, 200 mock bombings, and 53 mock sorties during the exercise. The RIA Novosti reported that the United States Air Force is currently investigating how the Tu-160’s escaped detection.

Lieutenant General Igor Khvorov said, “They were unable to detect the planes either with radars or visually.”

Khvorov denies any link of the tests to the current US-Iranian tension, saying, “Of course, our exercises did not have anything to do with the situation in Iran, but their organization indirectly echoed in that region.”

The Tupolev Tu-160 is a strategic bomber introduced in 1987. It resembles the North American B-1B Lancer, but is larger and faster, being powered by four NK-32 afterburning turbofans, the largest in any combat aircraft. It is not considered to be a stealth aircraft due to its exposed engine inlets and broad wing gloves.

According to Khvorov over the course of this year, two additional Tu-160s will be commissioned for the long-range strategic bomber fleet with the numerous upgrades, including the ability to launch cruise missiles, aviation bombs, and satellite communication.

Vehicle StorageIf you have come across an additional car, making one too many for your garage, you ought to install a shed to park it in! Cars should not be kept out in the open and exposed to the elements. It only takes one hailstorm, bad thunderstorm, or snowstorm to permanently damage your vehicle. Carports simply will not do the job well enough! They only cover a vehicle on one side, after all. A well-constructed shed will safeguard a vehicle on all sides. Sheds can also store more than cars! Other transportation vehicles, like watercraft, motorcycles, skis, bicycles, or karts can be stored safely in a shed. In fact, if you have these special vehicles, you may want to keep them separate anyway. There is likely a shed that matches your home so well, it will resemble an extra detached room of your house! When quality materials are used, a shed can even add an extra level of beauty to your home. PlayhouseYour shed can be a perfect playhouse for your children. Kids will love having a space of their own, a miniature house with windows, a door, and even details like eaves to make playing house feel more fun than ever. They can even take toys into their shed and have playtime. You will likely want this play space incorporated into your home life. Having a special, separate playhouse ensures that your entire home will not be filled with toys, books, dolls, etc. You can also make it a family project to add a flower box, a mailbox, shutters, and other cute details to your children’s new playhouse. Think of it as a much safer, larger, more reliable version of a tree house. Yard EquipmentA shed can keep all of your yard equipment handy. Your home requires special space for your lawnmower, gardening tools, potting soil, clay pots, insecticides, garden hoses, weed eater, pool cleaning equipment, and the numerous other yard care needs that keep your property looking sharp and classy. Your garage will be overburdened if you attempt to keep all of these items stored alongside your cars. It is also safer for your vehicles to have a special place for yard equipment to be stored. Keeping these items piled against the outer walls of your house is unsightly, and attempting to hide these items in an indoor closet is inconvenient. The only solution to the problem of having these numerous items for yard upkeep is a shed, built to store all of your needs in one convenient place. If you are ready to look into shed installation in Sarasota, FL, you will find that these affordable, convenient, attractive home features will do you so much good that they will pay for themselves.

Wikinews interviews Adrian Mizher, independent candidate for Texas’ 6th congressional district special election

Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, independent candidate Adrian Mizher agreed to answer some questions by phone on March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Mr Mizher.

Mizher describes himself as a senior loan closer on his LinkedIn profile at BBVA USA, a Birmingham-based subsidiary of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria. He has lived in Kennedale, Texas for five years and the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area for 16 of the last 24 years. A cum laude graduate of Southwestern Adventist University, he grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has lived for eight years in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He endeavours to bring “a never ending fight for fidelity to the Constitution and promotion of our Conservative values”, speaking to Wikinews on matters ranging from the economy to immigration.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Democratic holdout agrees to support health care reform in US

Sunday, December 20, 2009

A conservative Democratic United States senator has agreed to supply the key 60th vote needed for passage of a sweeping health care reform package. Senate Democrats have reached a breakthrough in their struggle to pass sweeping heath care reform legislation, lining up the 60 votes needed to overcome fierce Republican opposition. Senators met Saturday in Washington, D.C. during a driving snowstorm in a frenzied effort to move forward on President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority.

The spotlight was on moderate Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who had been the last holdout as Senate Democrats raced against the clock and against determined Republican opposition to pass their health care bill by their self-imposed deadline of December 25th, Christmas.

Change is never easy, but change is what is necessary in America today and and that is why I intend to vote for cloture, I intend to vote for cloture and for health care reform.

Nelson said he is now ready to vote for cloture, which would advance the bill. “Change is never easy, but change is what is necessary in America today and and that is why I intend to vote for cloture, I intend to vote for cloture and for health care reform,” he said.

Nelson said he decided to support the bill after winning new concessions from Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to limit the availability of abortions in insurance sold under the new legislation along with millions of dollars in Medicaid funding for Nebraska.

The legislation would extend health benefits to more than 30 million uninsured Americans and impose new regulations on the health insurance industry.

Senator Reid of Nevada has been working for months to win over one holdout Democratic senator after another, repeatedly altering the bill to satisfy different demands. Reid says reform is essential. “The broken system cannot continue and it will not continue. When President Obama signs this bill into law, we will officially end the era in which insurance companies win only when patients lose,” he said.

The broken system cannot continue and it will not continue. When President Obama signs this bill into law, we will officially end the era in which insurance companies win only when patients lose.

Nelson’s support should pave the way for Senate Democrats to win the first of a series of crucial procedural votes scheduled to begin at one o’clock in the morning on Monday and set to conclude — if everything goes smoothly for them — with final passage on Christmas Eve.

Republicans have been using a number of parliamentary procedures to delay action on the bill, including forcing a reading on the Senate floor Saturday of Reid’s 338-pages of last minute amendments. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky responded to the apparent Democratic breakthrough. “And Democrats are forcing a vote on it, as I indicated, over the weekend, counting on the fact that the American people are preoccupied with Christmas and not paying much attention to what they are doing,” he said.

The history that is being made here, make no mistake about it, the history that is being made here, is the ignoring of the will of the American people.

Republicans are unified in their opposition, saying the bill is too expensive and will not solve the problems with the current health care system. Senator McConnell dismissed claims by Democrats that the bill is historic. “The history that is being made here, make no mistake about it, the history that is being made here, is the ignoring of the will of the American people,” he said.

Senator John McCain of Arizona echoed those comments in the weekly Republican radio address saying, “Regrettably, there’s nothing in this legislation that effectively addresses the problem of health care hyperinflation. In fact, experts tell us the Democrat legislation makes matters worse.”

Democrats say they have been trying to reform the nation’s health care system for close to 70 years, ever since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in office. Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut was emotional as victory seemed within reach. “All we are trying to do is to guarantee that if you are a fellow citizen of ours, and you are struck with illness or a loved one is, that you will never again have that fear, that you will end up losing your home, your job, your retirement and your life savings because you have been afflicted with an illness through no fault of your own.”

If the Senate is able to pass a bill next week, it would be viewed as a major victory for President Obama. But the bill would still need to be reconciled with a health-care reform bill passed last month by the House of Representatives before the president could sign it into law next year.

There are a lot of of free tournaments to get into the poker world, particularly those tourney where free entry is the award from another poker challenge. Aside from these free tourneys, on the other hand, free pokers play is rather difficult to come by – unless you just need to win play cash. Free money games do not tend to exist – you cannot be offered a stack of free genuine cash and then go on to win actual cash and leave the bench whenever you want with your newer healthy stash.

It seems that playing fans planning to play for free and get real cash might have to search more afield than the poker benches. The biggest game of the time where you can place in no deposit and get real cash is bingo online.

Players can decide to play free bingo with no deposits from 2 distinct bingo games. The initial is the classic British ninety ball bingo, a slower game where the tension creates steadily and, with winners for one line, two lines and the full room (all three lines), in effect, you have 3 chances to win in all games. Free bingo with no deposits can also be located on the US 75 balls bingo game, a quick paced game, where the first individual to complete the game design wins the jackpot.

After doing the serious strategy games of poker, poker bingo players might scoff at the thought of turning to a game where it appears that luck is all that matters. On the other hand, there are yet some strategic problems at play in bingo. For instance, with all these bingo matches around offering all types of incentives for newer players to pick their bingo website over another, there are a lot of bargain to be done.

The initial strategy matter for online players is to pick between these offers to get the finest one for them. Free game with no deposit is only one of those offers – the query is, how much free game? And with how much free cash? Deposit bonuses can be huge or they can be less. This can make a big difference to your bank account. A number of online bingo firms give regular deposit bonus as well as greet bonuses, thus it is worth taking into account these is you strategy to become a frequent player at the bingo halls.

Some experts bingo sites give incredible awards for their free games as well so it is at all times worth looking these out prior to you committing to a certain bingo site. Aside from choosing between the 2 different games (why not attempt both?) and the types of awards and deposit bonus on offer, an additional thing for poker players to take into account prior to settling on a bingo website is the jackpot sizes and kinds that are available.

Online bingo websites normally give guaranteed jackpots of different sizes in their frequent games. These jackpots will at all times be accessible to win by somebody and the sum advertised is precisely what is up for grab.

 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Thursday, March 2, 2006

Buffalo, New York —In an unanimous vote, the City of Buffalo‘s Planning Board voted to table the Elmwood Village hotel Proposal, postponing voting on legislation for up to 30 days.

The Board said its decision was due to the lack of public involvement, saying that there have not been enough meetings.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a proposed project by Savarino Construction Services Corporation and was designed by Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five buildings, that include both businesses and residents, must be demolished.

The Forever Elmwood Corp. is a Buffalo-based non-profit organization founded in 1994. Justin Azzarella, the Executive Director for the organization voiced support for the proposal, stating: “I am here today to lend Forever Elmwood’s support the hotel project. Particularly, Forever Elmwood is encouraged by the fact that this building follows the more stringent Elmwood Village Design Guidelines. We have been speaking with Savarino Construction, and they have promised us [Forever Elmwood] that they will engage the community further, including the surrounding Block Clubs and businesses. For that reason, while Forever Elmwood is in support of this project and the type of project that it is, we are asking also that the project be tabled so that the community can be further engaged. Specifically the surrounding Block clubs which include the Granger, Claremont, Asland and The Lincoln Parkway Block Clubs.”

“Because of the excellent work that Karl does and the game plan that they have, I think its an ideal use of this particular location. I think that this particular type of development needs to be encouraged and promoted as opposed to roadblocked,” said a man who owns five properties near the proposal site.

However, Evelyn Bencinich, a resident of Granger Place and whose house would be located directly behind the hotel said, “My property value will be depreciated or non-existent because no one is going to want to live behind a multi-story hotel. We are facing up to a year of noisy and dangerous demolition and construction. Children, pets and even drunk rebellers could wander on site and get hurt. Traffic tie-ups caused by large machinery and garbage bins is inevitable. Where will pedestrians walk? We could experience increased unsanitary flooding in our yards and basements due to the digging and cementing for the underground parking garage. Rats will be displaced into the immediate neighborhoods and be in great abundance. Once we get past the year of nightmare construction, what if you build it and they don’t come? We could ultimately have a seven million dollar rooming house on our corner.”

Patty Morris, co-owner of Don Apparel with Nancy Pollina at 1119 Elmwood also asked that the project be tabled saying, “this has only been public knowledge for less than two weeks and the public never saw the redesign. How can you vote on anything that no one has seen yet? The Board cut off Morris saying, “so specifically you don’t have any problem with it [the design] you just…” Morris then said, “Oh I am totally against this project, but thats besides the point isn’t it.”

The planning board is also concerned that the current design may still be too big.

At one point Board member Susan Curran Hoyt said, “we know you’ve cut down your number of rooms on this project, but we still see it doesn’t seem to fit the description of a ‘botique’ hotel,” and asked Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarino Construction, “we wonder if you could reduce the rooms further.”

“One thing I didn’t talk about was the price levels of these rooms and that will be important to know. The room rate will be somewhere between US$120 and $160 a night, which is about the same price of the Hampton Inn down town and the smaller you make the hotel, the more expensive the rooms will get. We believe that we’ve made a good compromise in terms of the size of the hotel and perhaps botique means different things to different people,” said Hassett.

The board was also concerned that there is not enough parking asking, “are there alternative plans for valet parking off-site, in the event that you have a full hotel or a large event going on?”

“We are exploring several possibilities with respect to additional parking for valet and parking near-by,” replied Hassett. “We are also exploring the possibility of using the rear of 1105 Elmwood for additional parking, which would give us an additional ten or eleven spaces.”

The new design has a total of 55 parking spaces for 72 rooms, with 39 of them underground and the rest on ground level.

Hassett also said that a “parking study” will be done on the area.

Concerns that the second floor of the hotel will be too close to the property of 605 Forest were also brought up. The board asked how far the hotel would be from the property and Karl Frizlen replied saying it would “be approximately five feet from the property line,” but he also admitted that, “I do not know exactly how close the house next door” will be from the hotel, but did say “I think the house is about four or five feet away from the property line and we [the hotel] sit right on the property line.”

The board is concerned the setback from the property is not enough saying the space between the building and the hotel is “pretty narrow.”

The City’s Common Council also agreed to table the proposal also citing the need for more public engagement and the need for more organizations to respond including the Buffalo Preservation Board and the Office of Historic Preservation.

During that meeting, Hassett also said the proposal to try and get a variance to obtain the properties of 605 and 607 Forest were “now off the agenda.”

The Common Council is expected to meet and hold a public hearing about the project and the rezoning of the properties to be demolished (1119-1121 Elmwood) on Tuesday March 7, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. At the moment the properties are not zoned for a hotel.
