Commonly Used Treatment For Dead Leg

By Mike Lang

If you are into contact sports where body parts collide with each other, most likely you had experienced having a dead leg injury before. Dead leg or also known as charley horse is an injury commonly inflicted by landing a sharp part of the body to the leg of an opponent. The result would vary based on the strength and force of the blow. Pain, bruising, and inability to walk are the common effect of the injury especially with excessive pressure.

Basically, treating a dead leg depends on the grade of the injury. Lower grade such as grade 1 may involve basic treatment programs. However, grade 2 to 3 may require more serious and gentle rehabilitation programs in order to attain a successful and effective result without compromising the condition of the patient.

Sports Massage – it is among the commonly used natural treatments when it comes to treating injuries that are related to sports activities. Although they can also be used in helping the recovery and healing of injuries from car accidents and other related problems, they are specially designed and developed for sports injuries. Sports massage uses fairly firm hand strokes and massage techniques that will help prevent reoccurrence and strengthen muscle tissues. The methods used are also great for enhancing the circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the body which is vital for healing and recovery. It also triggers the body’s ability to heal itself. Usually, sports massage is only advisable during the later stages of the injury. Give some time for the injury to rest as this will help a lot in the healing process. As soon as pain is not that excruciating, you can always start with the massage therapy. An option you can also take is to ask your doctor on when it would be best to take a sports massage or any similar therapy that can be used to speed up the recovery process.

–R.I.C.E. – rest, immobilization, cold compress, and exercise is a popular program followed by athletes as well as average individuals for a faster and more effective recovery from any type of sports injury. The RICE program is usually the best thing a patient can do for his or her part as the rest would fall into the hands of the doctor or therapist. As long as the program is followed, any patient can expect great results in the long run. In most cases, 12 weeks is required in order to fully recover from the injury. However, the cases may vary from person to person as their condition would differ from each other.

–Stretching and Strengthening Programs – there are a variety of programs created to bring back the lost function, strength, and motion of a dead leg. These are composed of stretching exercise as well as strengthening workouts that provides a patient with a basic program that will help them recuperate with the condition. Do not perform any of the prescribed exercise programs your doctor would give you in case serious pain is still felt on the injured areas of the human body.

Australia: Latrobe City budget sees 1.5% rate rise, A$10 million loan to be spent

Monday, June 7, 2021

In a meeting that was held virtually, Latrobe City Council in Victoria, Australia today unanimously approved its 2021/2022 draft budget. Rates and charges are due to be increased by 1.5%, and A$31.196 million has been allocated for capital works. A$10 million of funding that was borrowed in the previous 2020/2021 budget will be used to fund local projects, with A$7.5 million for the second stage of upgrades to the Moe rail precinct, and A$2.5 million to the upgrade of Kernot Hall, a venue in Morwell.

I regard [the budget] as a masterful piece of financial engineering.

Speaking about the budget, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss deemed it “a masterful piece of financial engineering”, declaring that the budget would ensure no losses of service for the local community. Middlemiss said that following the closure of Hazelwood Power Station, government grants were issued that led to the construction of a number of local facilities, including a performing arts centre, an aquatic centre, and a basketball stadium. However, told Middlemiss, these facilities caused significant financial strain on the council, with the performing arts centre being funded 40% by Latrobe City Council, and the new facilities also created operating costs for the council to bear.

Speaking about the Moe rail upgrades, Middlemiss said that the council was “fobbed off by the federal government”, with the local federal member of parliament Darren Chester having directed the council to apply for a fund that Middlemiss claimed had closed. This led the council to borrow A$7.5 million to fund the rail upgrades in this budget. Middlemiss predicted that the financial situation could tighten in the next years, but that “at the moment, I think our community will be quite happy with this budget.”

The draft 2021/2022 budget was released on April 12, with 28 days being set aside for written submissions. Those who chose to submit were given the opportunity to speak to their submissions on May 24 at an unscheduled council meeting. One of these submitters who chose to speak was Barbara Johnson, a representative of the Latrobe Combined History Group. The budget resolution now contains a doubling of funding for the area’s 6 local historical societies, who currently each recieve $500 per year. Under this budget, that figure will be doubled to $1000 per year. Deputy Mayor Darren Howe praised the societies’ “outstanding service” today when speaking about the budget, while also thanking Johnson for her recent presentation.

Councillor Dale Harriman today said that he had a number of people contact him about the increased charges proposed in this budget. Harriman said that he understood their annoyance with rising fees, but acknowledged the “constant cost to maintain the facilities”, saying the 1.5% rate rise cap statewide had an impact on the services provided, and ultimately that given the circumstances, the solution provided was the best one, and that the charges would be kept to a minimum.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Oil spill hits Australia’s Sunshine coastline

Sunday, March 15, 2009

200,000 litres of oil leaked into waters off the coast of Brisbane from the Pacific Adventurer when their fuel tanks were damaged in rough seas on Wednesday. The figure is about ten times higher than the original estimate of twenty thousand litres of oil. The devastating diesel oil spill has spread along 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Queensland coast. In addition, 31 containers with 620 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser flew overboard during the violent storm.

Questions are being asked why the Hong Kong cargo ship was out in seas with nine meter waves caused by Cyclone Hamish, a Category 5 tropical cyclone, as well as why the fertiliser containers were not properly secured. One of the overboard containers ruptured the hull of the Pacific Adventurer, causing between 30 to 100 tonnes of oil to spew from the severely damaged ship.

If the ammonium nitrate mixes with the heavy oil, an explosion could occur. None of the containers have been recovered. Some of these may float, but it is believed that they may have sunk which then may cause algal blooms.

Disaster zones have been declared at Bribie and Moreton Islands, and along the Sunshine coast.

The vessel’s owner, Swire Shipping, reported that a second leak began on Friday, when the ship began listing after docking at Hamilton for repairs. “As full soundings of the vessel’s tanks were being taken at the port to determine how much oil had leaked from the vessel, a small quantity of fuel oil escaped from the Pacific Adventurer,” it stated. The ship was brought upright, and a recovery vessel was used to suck up the oil from the water. The leak produced a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River. Booms were placed around this oil spill so that a skimmer could clean up the second spill.

Swire Shipping could face clean up costs of AU$100,000 a day as well as fines up to AU$1.5million (US$977,000; £703,000) if found guilty of environmental breaches or negligence.

Sunshine Coast beaches are slowly starting to be reopened. The beach of Mooloolaba was still closed following reports of burning sensations from swimmers. 12 beaches remain closed; however, 13 have been reopened.

Over 300 state government and council workers are using buckets, rakes and spades in the clean up effort. Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbott says the majority will be gone by Sunday afternoon. The full environmental impact on wildlife is not yet known. One turtle and seven pelicans have been found covered in oil.

There are concerns that the drinking water of Moreton Island is at risk, as the island uses water from the underground water table near the oil spill site.

“Every bucketload of contaminated sand has to be removed from the island by barge, and each bucketload from a front-end loader weighs about one tonne. It’s just an impossible task,” said Mr Trevor Hassard of the Tangalooma Dolphin Education Centre.

The commercial fishing industry has suffered from the incident. Trawlers won’t resume operations until Sunday evening, and any catches will be tested for human consumption.

Braces

Braces can be visible or invisible. This option is used in patients who want to correct several crooked teeth. Visible braces may be more affordable for some individuals, but invisible braces may help patients feel less self conscious while use them. The braces correct the position of the teeth and force them to become straighter. It can take a while for teeth to move into their desired positions. Sometimes the cosmetic dentist may need to make readjustments on the braces to move the process along more quickly.

Dentures

Individuals who are missing several teeth or need teeth pulled can choose to get dentures as replacement teeth. This option is affordable for many patients and dentures can be removed easily at any time. Dentures can help people chew their food better and fill in missing teeth and chips. As a result, smiles can be greatly improved with their use.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers cover teeth that are damaged. The veneers go right over teeth that are broken or chipped. Also, stained teeth can be beautified by applying veneers over them. A cosmetic dentist can use a bonding procedure to make veneers permanent if a patient chooses this option.

Implants

Patients who are missing teeth and roots may opt to have implants. These are very natural replacement teeth and make a great choice for individuals who are missing front teeth.

eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days

Chess champion is “Fritzed” by computer

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Russian chess grandmaster, Vladimir Kramnik lost the final match of his man versus machine match against the Deep Fritz chess program. The six game match in Bonn, Germany had a final result of 4-2 for the German-developed chess program which runs on readily available computer hardware.

The first match which concluded on November 25 was a draw, Kramnik lost the second game to the computer with some indications that he overlooked a mate in one win. Third through fifth matches were all draws.

Kramnik, whilst the current world chess champion, is actually ranked third in the world. A contributory factor in this is his health problems. The world champion suffers from a rare form of arthritis which makes sitting playing in tournaments extremely painful for him.

It’s Time To Re Evaluate Your Help Desk Software.

Submitted by: John R. Wall

Help desk software is available in several styles. An intranet stand alone internal package, web based software that keeps things in the cloud as well as a hybrid utilizing internal and external assets to deal with client or stake-holder needs.

Patterns will continue to push toward internet based helpdesk software and away from standard do-it-yourself solutions. The internet based tools may help automate your processes, minimize complaints and errors, and assist with keeping track of assets and licenses in addition to making “to do” lists and resources.

Help desk software isn t a static application. Good software packages will routinely checck systems and servers to provide key data on performance efficiency and effectiveness. Most helpdesk software support also will let you control particular machines and also work stations remotely to simplify monitoring, updates and trouble shooting.

SysAid, from SysAid Technologies, is one option that’s gained recognition within the internet help desk industry in recent years. SysAid is a set of net based tools that can help you handle a variety of IT and trouble ticket challenges. One of the secrets of their product is the ability to automate many manager responsibilities making your job much easier and allowing you to be quicker to respond. Many reviewers and customers of SysAid help desk software compliment the company s web interface. The software is fairly intuitive and permits strong metrics. SysAid helpdesk software offers a limited no-cost helpdesk solution that may be of interested to a lot of smaller firms as well. With only a minimal knowledge of programming, it should be pretty easy to this helpdesk application installed and setup.

Another fascinating provider in the help desk software space is Kayako. Although this internet housed package offers many similar pc and internet solutions to SysAid, Kayako also offers an automatic installer that will have the helpdesk software running on just about any server after a directed installation process. Kayako reviewers often rave about the chat service made available from the Kayako. The company features SupportSuite, eSupport and LiveResponse within 3 levels of pricing and license charges.

One interesting feature offered from many of these companies in both their no charge helpdesk software and subscription/pay services is assistance in a variety of languages. SysAid, as an example, has helpdesk softare built in a variety of languages common throughout the U.S. and Europe. The mix is the perfect variety of languages for the international company with a European concentration.

Other companies include Asian ‘languages’ with their helpdesk support. There are a number of companies that offer software with customizable language dictionaries and regionally focused programs. Depending on where your work-force and customer base is located, you may want to choose a different help desk software package. Make sure the one you choose also matches your future growth plans.

Virtually every IT helpdesk program will also provide a feature that is sometimes forgotten. Licensing compliance for your software. It’s every company s responsibility to make sure that they purchase the necessary licenses for the software placed on their computers. The risk is great.

In 2008, for example, the conglomerate Sony BMG caught the eye of investigators who identified that nearly 47% of the software titles on Sony s individual PCs, Macs and servers were not compliant. This is a company that had been at the forefront in legal battles working to stop unlicensed use of its content. This investigation was costly for Sony, but more importantly, Sony BMG was subject to unwanted publicity that could could have been averted. With a well designed strategy utilizing IT helpdesk software they could have created reports decreasing the business’ risks.
