If you have a teen athlete, you know that the demands placed on him or her are far different than that of a typical student. They are expected to keep up with their academic work, keep their grades in line, and maintain a minimum grade point average all while serving as representatives of their schools, missing time in class and at home to practice, compete, and travel to other schools. If you have a teen athlete, you may or may not know that these teens often experience much more significant pressure to drink and party than other teens.

While schools in recent years have cracked down on this type of behavior, it is still far too prevalent. Teams want to celebrate their victories and drown their defeats, and often, alcohol is the method of choice. Your teen athlete, in being a part of a sports team, may face undue peer pressure to try alcohol or drugs. The question is, what can you do as a parent to minimize your teen’s risk?

The first and best advice is always to talk to your teen athlete. Have an open and ongoing dialogue with your teen about peer pressure and drinking. Make it clear that your teen has a choice make sure your teen understands that it is ok to say no.

To help your teen athlete make it easier to avoid high-pressure situations with teammates, be involved. Go to your teen’s games, be an active part of his or her athletic life. Parents are often needed to serve as line coaches or play other supportive roles; if that is a possibility for you as a parent, it is a good way to stay involved and be able to see first-hand if bad peer pressure situations are developing.

Understand the policies of your teen’s school. Make sure you discuss the ramifications with your teen about what could happen if he or she were to be caught. Most schools suspend players or dismiss them from the team altogether. If the sport is important to your teen, this will serve as motivation to help them make the right choice when the pressure is on.

One situation that is not often discussed but can be prevalent is the attitude of the coaches toward their players’ drinking. Some coaches look the other way; others glamorize or glorify drinking and partying. In rare instances, the coaches will actually supply the alcohol. If you run into a coach like that, contact the school and make them aware of the situation. Coaches have a very powerful and influential role in the lives of the teen athletes they work with; if they are abusing that position of power, they need to be stopped.

Grades should stay up, homework should be done, academics should be prioritized, and the right choices should be made. If you need a new grill, then why would you pay money for a Webber kettle grill. The are not the most lightest of grills, and you just cant put it into the trunk of your car without dismantling it. The coals are placed on the sides of the grill whilst the food is placed on the upper grill between the two fires. This means that no fire actually touches the food, and when the lid is down it creates a natural convection. A great advantage of this system means that you never have to turn the meat. So as a chef, cooking on one of these is an absolute joy! It means that I can get on with other stuff whilst the meat is cooking.Another thing to point out about the Webber kettle, is that the grilling surface on these babies is vast. They come in different sizes right up to the ranch kettle, which just happens to be the largest manufactured barbecue kettle in the world! This how-to guide will teach you about each step in the process of growing your first marijuana plant indoors. From seeds and nutrients to lighting and hydroponic systems, this guide is a basic overview for the novice indoor marijuana grower.

Seeds

For your first grow operation I recommend you seeds that are easy to obtain, such as those found in your own bud. Once you get some experience growing you may want to consider buying cannabis seeds. There are many types of marijuana seeds out there and many different strains. There are feminized seeds which yield only female plants, and there are low-rider dwarf plants that flower automatically. There are many varieties of Sativa, Indica, and hybrid (containing genetics from both Indica and Sativa strains). Sativa and sativa-dominant strains tend to give the user more of a ‘head high’ as opposed to a ‘body high’; whereas Indica-dominant strains tend to give you that couch-lock stoney high. Step 2 – Growing Method

There are many methods of growing cannabis but we will only talk using soil here, as this is a beginners tutorial. Hydroponic growing will be a topic of a future tutorial.

Growing in soil is also the method suggested by the Cannabis Chef when the marijuana will be used in foods. Soil will provide the most natural flavor for cannabis and is best for cooking.

Germinate Seeds

It is extremely helpful to germinate the seeds before starting an indoor soil grow operation. To germinate the seeds, simply place them in a folded dampened paper towel and leave over night. Check the seeds, if the sprout has begun to break through the husk of the seed then it is ready. If not, re-dampen the paper towel and continue this process until the seed germinates. If the sprout does not break through within five or so days, it is most likely a dud. Toss, and start again.

Prepare the Space

You will need a space to grow your plants. Where ever you chose to grow, make sure you prepare the space properly. I suggest lining the floor with trash bags or plastic drop sheets to prevent water damage. It is also a good idea to line or paint the walls with a white material. This will help reflect light back at the plants. If this is not an option you may use aluminum foil. Make sure the dull side of the foil is facing outwards towards the plants. Aluminum foil is not a great choice however it is better than nothing.

Choose and Install a Light

The Cannabis Chef suggests staying away from florescent light bulbs, but if you must always use a CFL (compact florescent light) and at least 100 watts for one plant. Your plant will most likely grow, however you will also likely be disappointed in your crops. We suggest using between 250-400 Watt HPS (High Pressure sodium) or HID MH (high-intensity discharge metal halide) lights. You will want to mount the lights in a way that allows you to move them up as the plant grows. For safety we suggest using a reflector on the light, and a fan in the space you are using. Not only will the fan prevent it from getting to warm in the space it will also help to circulate oxygen to the plants.

Setting up the Plants

For each plant you are growing you will need one 3-5 gallon bucket. You can find these at Home Depot or almost any department store. You could also find a great deal at amazon.com. Make sure you poke about 5 small holes in the bottom of the bucket to allow excess water to drain. You may use the lid of the bucket as a water catcher by placing it underneath the bucket.

Next, fill each bucket with soil, leaving about 4 inches at the top. We suggest using organic potting soil. Test the soils PH using a PH Meter. The soil should be somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. Remember adding nutrients will increase the acidity of the soil. There are PH balancing kits available to help achieve the perfect balance. This is important for a healthy plant.

Using your finger, push a small whole about quarter to a half inch deep into the soil in the center of the bucket. Know place the seed or clone in and cover with soil. The soil should be packed firmly but not so dense that the sprout will not be able to push through.

The Light Routine

We recommend using 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark for the first two weeks. After the first two weeks you may increase the amount of light by one hour each day until you are using between 18 and 24 hours of light in a 24 hour period. After the plants reach desired height (probably around 12′ depending on the strain) you may decrease the lighting to just 12 hours on and 12 hours off. This will trigger the flowering cycle of the plant. This is the time the buds will begin to form. This is also the time where you must remove any male plants. Male plants can be detected by their pollen sacs. These are small pod-like plant structures which will fertilize the female plants (causing seeds and less potency!). So be sure to remove the males as soon as can spot them.

The Nutrient Routine

For the first two weeks after germination we suggest using only water to feed the plants. For the next two weeks slowly increase the nutrient solution to the suggested amount. This will help prevent against ‘burning’ or ‘shocking’ the plants. During the vegetative stage we suggest using N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) ratio of about 30-15-15. For the flowering stage use a 15-30-30 ratio. This is only what we recommend, and every strain will do better using a different regiment. If you bought your seeds from a legitimate source it may come with documentation with a N-P-K suggestion.

Harvesting

Harvesting is a huge topic that involves many things including drying, curing, trimming and more. Here we will only get into knowing when to harvest. Look forward to future material about the harvesting process. You will want to harvest the cannabis plants when the trichomes (small hair-like glands found on the marijuana buds) are an amber color. Use a magnifying glass to examine the buds. When around 90% of the trichomes are amber in color, it is time to harvest!

Making your own ghillie suit is time-consuming and labor-intensive, but many people find it to be a highly rewarding project, especially when wearing their ghillie suit while out hunting or competing in paintball games.

Ghillie suits were first used by Scottish gamekeepers assigned to capture and release for the nobility before a hunt, in essence stocking the woods with game so the hunt would be more successful. These same gamekeepers would also wear their ghillie suits when patrolling the grounds at night, protecting the livestock from poachers and predators.

Later the Scots decided ghillie suits were the perfect camouflage for their military units, so gamekeepers were recruited and trained as snipers for the Scottish military. Ghillie suits are still used by military units today both for sniping missions and for reconnaissance.

Ghillie suits are commonly used for paintballing, airsoft gaming, hunting, bird-watching, and for naturalists. You can purchase ready-made ghillie suits for reasonable prices from many online stores, but you can also construct your own ghillie suit if you have the time and energy. Even store-made ghillie suits can be tailored to match the setting in which it will be worn.

Before you get started

Before you make your ghillie suit, visit the areas you will be wearing the suit and take note of the coloring of the bushes, ground cover, and earth. Decide what season you will most likely be using the suit the most, as that can determine which colors are most dominant. How to make your ghillie suit

1. Cut and dye the burlap.

Using a heavy duty pair of scissors, cut the burlap into strips of varying lengths. Mix up the dye, and dye the strips into many, many colors, creating as many variations of the colors you noted in the desired environment. Remember that some colors will change as the burlap dries, so make a wide variety of colors. Mix and match colors – dipping the strips in one color and then another – to create all kinds of shades and variations on the strips.

1. Shred the burlap pieces.

When the burlap dries, shred the pieces and make each one unique.

1. Cut and attach water-resistant canvas to the front and back of the flight suit.

You’ll want to cover whatever parts of the suit you want to be water-resistant and able to handle wear and tear. You may want to add canvas strips to the elbows, forearms and knees if you’re going to be crawling in the dirt. You can either sew this on or use the glue gun to glue it on.

1. Cut and attach the netting over the flight suit.

Make sure the netting will blur your form so you no longer have the silhouette of a human being, but instead look like a bush or a blob. Make sure you give yourself lots of extra space so the netting won’t constrict your movements either. Sew the netting on using the fishing line and needles.

1. Cut and attach the netting to the helmet cover.

Follow the same instructions as above.

1. Attach the burlap strips to the netting all over the suit and helmet cover.

Sew the pieces of shredded burlap on, making sure you layer the pieces such that it looks natural and varied and does not concentrate any one color in any one place. Use the fishing line and needle to sew the pieces on. This is the most time-consuming part of the process, but it is also somewhat of an art form to make sure you use varied pieces and colors. Make sure you attach enough pieces of the helmet but not so much that you won’t be able to see.

1. Drag the suit through the mud and let it dry. 2. Congratulate yourself! You’re done!
